Research- Short Films and Trailers
Task 1 |
Short Film Research:
Definition: 'A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. No consensus exists as to where that boundary is drawn: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as “an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits”.
What makes a short film?
A short film is a film which gets to the point of the narrative quickly and this way it is more exciting for the audience as it can all happen at quite a fast speed and the shock of the narrative (as usually a twist or the point of the narrative is stretched to the end in order to keep the audience watching) is prolonged. This is why short films can be very popular and successful as it uses conventions such as twists, equilibriums and cliff hangers as the length can either mean leaving the film on a question for the audience or a soon answered question in which is spread across the short film to keep the audience interested.

Overall Recap-Short films
Trailer Research:
Definition: 'A trailer (also known as a preview or coming attraction) is an advertisement or a commercial for a feature film that will be exhibited in the future at a cinema, the result of creative and technical work. The term "trailer" comes from their having originally been shown at the end of a feature film screening'.
Overall Recap- Trailers
'Spider man:Homecoming'
Overall the trailer 'Spider man: Homecoming' would appeal to a younger audience (mainly teenagers) because of the positive representation of teenagers and it's narrative based around a fun and likeable teenager who a younger audience could relate to.
'Split'
'Split' would appeal to younger adults and older as it contains a subject which is seen as more mature and fearful and could be inappropriate for younger children. However the use of the victim being a young girl could also appeal to younger adults/older teenagers because of the relatable content in age.
'La La Land'
'La La Land' is a fun upbeat and musical film which could appeal to any gender and any age- this is more likely to be aimed at mainstream audience's because of the use in popular actors ('star appeals') and the popular genre- romance.
'Moonlight'
'Moonlight" would most likely appeal to an older audience because of the use in the drama genre and serious and mature nature and narrative of the film, however I believe any gender would enjoy it.
'Logan Lucky'
'Logan Lucky' is quite American based because of the stereotypes used in it and the violence and male stereotypes- therefore I believe it would appeal to a more American and male audience.
Trailer codes and conventions
Trailers seem to use quick editing in order to fit in the best bits of the film in order to make the film overall look good to intrigue audiences to watch it. Trailers also overall use distinct music which fits the genre in order to clearly convey the genre to the audience. This would be a good use of conventions that we could develop on- these are good ways of intriguing an audience in and seen as most importantly used within the trailers perhaps over the other micro- features, although all are important.
What I have learnt:
From my short film and trailer research I have learnt that there are certain codes and conventions within a trailer and a short film which conveys the narrative and the different genres. For example the horror genre commonly uses parallel sound which is usually non-diegetic sound (music) which is tense and creates an unnerving atmosphere as a sound signifier to send a 'message' to the audience for them to become scared. Therefore can attract certain audiences more than others; this meaning the conventions and/or genre is what causes a film to gain a 'niche' or 'mainstream' audience and can determine how large the audience is.
Our choice in making a Trailer:
Me and my peer have decided to produce a trailer for our coursework rather than a short film; after we developed our knowledge by researching both Short films and Trailers. I have learnt that trailers are exciting and usually have quick cuts in order to highlight the best parts of the film in order to intrigue the certain target market audience. Me and my peer are inspired to make a trailer because of the range in use of micro- features to attract the audience. We also were inspired to be able to write a whole narrative while conveying it in an interesting way in order for the film to succeed because the trailer encourages the target audience to watch it.
Task 2 |
Genre Research:
Definition of genre: 'A film genre (/ˈʒɒnrə/ or /ˈdʒɒnrə/) is a motion picture category based on similarities in either the narrative elements or the emotional response to the film (namely, serious, comic, etc.). Most theories of film genre are borrowed from literary genre criticism'.
Different types of Genre:
Action genre: 'Action film is a film genre in which the protagonist or protagonists end up in a series of challenges that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases'.
Thriller genre: 'Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film and television, having numerous subgenres. Thrillers are characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety'.
Horror genre: 'Horror is a genre of fiction which is intended to, or has the capacity to frighten, scare, disgust, or startle their readers or viewers by inducing feelings of horror and terror. Literary historian J. A'.
Comedy genre: 'COMEDY Definition of Comedy: A dramatic work that is light and often humorous or satirical in tone and that usually contains a happy resolution of the thematic conflict. Popular entertainment composed of jokes, satire, or humorous performance Sub - Genres of Comedy There are few sub-genres of comedy'.
Romance genre: 'The romance novel or romantic novel discussed in this article is the mass-market literary genre. Novels of this type of genre fiction place their primary focus on the relationship and romantic love between two people, and must have an "emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending."
The Thriller Genre
We have decided to have our trailer as thriller focused for the genre as we believe from research the thriller genre can be more shocking and there is more opportunity in using a wide range of micro-features and macro-features. This way with these techniques we will be able to attract the right target market audience in order for the film to be successful. Our target audience will be all genders however a more mature audience as from our research thrillers can be focused on more mature narratives and can be too inappropriate for younger audiences.
Steve Neale's Genre Theory:
Steve Neale's theories on films could be very helpful when it comes to producing our own trailer as it has developed our knowledge on how to attract an audience depending on the sort of target audience and genre. This is especially important considering our chosen genre is thriller; as thrillers can become cliché and therefore boring- although I have learnt from Steve Neale's theory that we should use certain visual and sound signifiers within our trailer in order to fulfil expectations, for example creating a clear perpetrator and victim through use of gender and age etc. We could also add a more exciting twist within the film that could be slightly given away with a hint within the trailer to keep the audience interested and excited about the film as it will be different from other trailer narratives they have seen.
Why Genre is important for audiences:
Why Genre is important for producers:
Codes and Conventions:
Codes definition: 'Codes are systems of signs, which create meaning. Codes can be divided into two categories – technical and symbolic. Technical codes are all the ways in which equipment is used to tell the story in a media text, for example the camera work in a film'.
Conventions definition: 'The common characteristics or conventions of any genre, including film, are sometimes called codes. These can include structural codes, which are such features as particular kinds of plot, character, or setting. Stylistic codes include such features as particular lighting, shooting style, or music'.

'Eden Lake'
Eden Lake- 'During a romantic weekend getaway, a young couple confronts a gang of youths, and suffers brutal consequences'.

Trailer:
Cinematography-Long shots are used in order to set the scene and presented to the audience where the characters are. The couple are shown to be in the wilderness- this automatically gives the feeling of isolation and can discomfort the audience as if they were to 'run into trouble' they wouldn't have any help. Also the use of the long shots showing the wilderness portrays their fight against nature as well as the young people ('binary opposites')- 'man vs nature' and 'old vs young'- this representing their struggle.
Many close ups are also used in order to show the different expressions and emotions on character's faces- this conveys to the audience what kind of attitude each character has; this then introducing the audience to individual characters already before they have even seen the film in order to intrigue the audience and make them more invested in the characters and therefore the film.
Mise-en-scene- the prop of the navigator that speaks out and says, 'at your first opportunity turn around'- gives a false sense of security as the couple laugh at the same time because the navigator warns them to turn around but they don't listen suggesting there is something dangerous ahead of them meaning literally and metaphorically.
The young group wear basic clothing such as plain t-shirts and jeans. This may represent them as not very privileged teenagers and because of this implying a rough up bringing with not very nice parents this explaining to the audience their bad behaviour.
The prop of the car represents the power within the group, when the couple have the car they are seen as the mature ones also with safety as they can get away. However when the boy steals the car he then has the power as he can the couple pain and is shown as the one with more status.
Editing- use of words over no action; to portray the importance of what is saying, this not only represents the genre through use of a dark coloured background used; foreshadowing the 'dark story' behind the loveable couple, but also can explain the narrative more to the audience in order to get across to the viewers what type of film it is.
The use in quick cuts is used to rise the tension for the audience because it shows the characters adrenaline and fear- putting the audience in the character's 'shoes' in order to get a fearful and scared reaction out of them to convey the thriller genre.
The title and some of the writing is shown in a orange type of colour with the effect on it that is implied to the audience as blood and dirt. This suggesting there is gore within the film highlighting the target audience as older teenagers and more mature audiences, as it can be seen as inappropriate for younger audiences. The words and sentences shown over the dark screen start off white in colour however at the end become the same 'dirty' colour as the title which is shown at the end. The progress in change in colour suggests the unexpected twist and shows the couples struggle through the film- this could foreshadow that the couple's 'end' turns bad and there isn't an equilibrium in the story.
The flashes of red used in shots and to transition to other shots is a visual signifier for danger as the colour signifiers the dangerous characters of the group of young people and also gives the feeling of death as blood is red suggesting there may be deaths throughout the narrative.
Sound- the use of the voice over gives more of an in site in the couples relation in order for the audience to connect more with the characters so if something bad happens there is an emotion response from the audience.
Light, soft music is used before the noise of the dog barking and the pitch of the music lowers in order to convey the contrast in the couple's and the teenager's behaviour. It also represents the disruption they may bring to them. Sharp sound is used before the sound of the car follows continuing the representation of power; this showing the couple with a lower status and now at a disadvantage creating a scared reactions from the audience because of the lack in equipment they have to survive against the teenagers. Towards the end fast pace music is used to show the adrenaline within the characters and also to build up the tension in order to create a more tense atmosphere. While this happens a lot of dietetic sound and dialogue is used in order to create realism- because the story seems more believable it is seen as even more 'creepy' and intriguing because it could possibly happen in real life.

'Disturbia'
'Disturbia': 'Ever since his father died, young Kale (Shia LaBeouf) has become increasingly sullen and withdrawn, until he finds himself under house arrest. With cabin fever setting in, he turns his attention to spying on his neighbours, becoming increasingly suspicious that one of them is a serial killer. However, he wonders if he is right, or if his overactive imagination is getting the better of him'.

Trailer:
Cinematography- a lot of close ups are used throughout the trailer in order to show that everything that is shown in the shot is significant and important; like the close up of the newspaper and shots of the main character and the implied perpetrator. This gives a more interesting appeal to the film as it gets the audience already involved in the narrative making them intrigued in the thriller and the mystery of the story.
Mid- shots are used to show the character's actions as well as emotions, although it is a thriller some comedy is added in so it can appeal to a larger audience to show some diverse genres ( not just thriller however it is overall a thriller based narrative). The Mid-shots also show the difference in status and power as the younger people aren't believed over the older man; this creating tension for the audience as it is frustrating understanding the struggles the characters go through.
Mise-en-scene- the prop of the tracking devise on the main character's leg represents his entrapment which is ironic because he just wants to help the mystery on the murder. It also shows his rebellious character as he has broken the law in order to get the tracking devise on him- this may highlight his struggle through the narrative as he represented in a negative light giving his character a disadvantage.
The 'blood' on the window can represent danger and can be alarming because it suggests something bad is going to happen as it can convey death through the use of shocking action. The use of the knife that the implied perpetrator uses also could foreshadow his bad and harsh actions just like the knife as it is sharp and threatening.
Editing- fading into other shots is used to transition the shots which at first shows the character's slow and steady life as he is stuck in his house, unable to do move showing his relaxed and boring life he has at the moment. Throughout quick shots are used in contrast to show his sudden adrenaline when he suspects a murder; which at first is shown through quick shots to show the mystery as he may be wrong.
However, after long fades are used to show the realism sinking in to prolong the shock for the audience- creating a fearful response and intriguing response from the audience as it may be seen as more realistic and therefore more interesting and frightful.
Words are then shown over the edited image of blinds to represent for the main character that this mystery is taking over his life because he is becoming obsessed with the situation this highlighting it overcoming his life which can create the audience to also be involved more in the film as their is more knowledge of the story and the character given to them. The use of flashing white colour is used after to create the atmosphere of disorientation to make the audience understand how the character feels in order to make the target audience want to see it.
Sound- a deep drum beat is used at a steady pace at the beginning to show the steadiness of his life and how easy going it is as he is the typical teenager; rebellious, troublesome and a relationship interest is shown. However , the beat gets more intense but used less so this prolongs the shock and the suspicion and mystery.
Dialogue is also used form the film in the thriller to describe the character's attitude and narrative- this implying the perpetrator and victim which gives a response from the audience towards characters- either disliking a character or liking them and in their heads encouraging their success and therefore there to be a equilibrium at the end.

Trailer:
Cinematography- a lot of long shots are used to show the action in order to show the terrible situations happening to explain the story more. The long shots set the scene and add more visual effects that the audience enjoy and also convey the supernatural and thriller feel to the film because the events that happen in the long shots give an uncomfortable and poser feeling.
close ups are used to show emotions on the character's faces to represent each character and how they feel towards each event happening which could foreshadow what is going to happen and who is to blame if there is a perpetrator in the narrative.
panning- this creates mystery for what's going to happen next, as the audience want to know what the camera is going to show as it pans around. This builds the suspense and the tension and implies to the audience there is going to be something when the camera pans around.
Mise-en-scene- at the beginning when the funeral is taking place the props, roses are used, the colour red and white. This is ironic because roses are seen as beautiful and tragic events have happened this may suggest the main character being able to see these tragic events as supernatural powers and/or a 'gift'. The colour red also represents the danger and can be an alarming colour which can foreshadow the character's future as bad or good, The main character is handed a white flower and therefore could highlight the light in his life in how he could stop the bad situations and may foreshadow his light ending; through the use of his 'reading the future powers' to save himself and others.
Glass and fire are also main themes throughout the trailer- a lot of glass is broken and fires are started. This shows that because of these events and his so called 'powers' his life is broken just like the broken glass and also suggests he is in danger this is conveyed through the symbolism through the fire.
Editing- there is writing used over dark blue background which gives more of a background on the characters and narrative. The blue is a cool and relaxing colour and therefore showing his life is normal and average in contrast to the day the plane sets on fire and therefore this is more shocking. It is also more of a shock for the audience because he is seen as innocent and vulnerable and therefore we as an audience feel more sorry for his character.
There is fade editing used later on where there are black fades used but slowly so the audience are unable to see the trailer for parts which creates suspense and builds the tension in order to make the audience question 'what is actually going on?'- 'who's the perpetrator?'- 'why is this happening?'.
Sound- At the beginning the sound of wind whistling is used this is in order to create a sense of impending doom because of the eerie sound which creates an unnerving atmosphere.
Later on repetitive loud crashing sounds are used this is to resemble the deaths as it is used again and again in a pattern-like way; just like the pattern like approach to the deaths.
The sound of heavy breathing is used in order for the audience to connect with the characters more and understand how they are feeling as the sound of the heavy breathing is relatable to the teenage characters suffering realistically.
When the deaths happen diegetic sound is used of what is happening however no sound track is used this represents the realism sinking in; to convey the harsh subject in order to make it more realistic.

Trailer:
Cinematography- Mid- shots show expressions on the character's faces this shows how some of the character's are reacting from the event of the main character's death. The mid-shots used also to show the development in characters changing over the course of the narrative because of the main event in the film.
Long shot- forest and city; weak in forest (isolation)- this is commonly used in thriller films to create a feeling of vulnerability and put the victim at a disadvantage and for the audience to feel sympathy for his character when he is attacked.
close ups- are used like most thrillers do in order to present the different characters and the personalities to convey the character driven story focusing on performers.
Mise-en-scene- props are used that look expensive to show the big party and family gathering which highlights the main character's money, privileged life and higher status. This is done to show he may struggle with what he is going to go through however may also foreshadow he will succeed in protecting himself as he can be seen as the equivalent to the 'final girl' who is usually seen as vulnerable, emotionally unstable, alone and weak but always is the equilibrium to the narrative.
A gun is also used in order to represent his danger and can be seen as alarming as it convey something bad is going to further happen and this shows he is trapped and surrounded with danger.
Muted colours are used during shots with him and the other ghost to show an otherworldly feel, a sense of coldness (dead bodies) and distance.
Editing- the words 'this is the story of Nick Powell's life' are shown and this gives an insight on characters and also who the story is based around to show the centre of the narrative.
Additionally, quick cuts during murder scene are used to show how pace and disorientation is taking place within the story and the character's lives. More quick shots are used to show the character's adrenaline and fear when getting killed. The quick cuts are used to show pace and disorientation when the shadow appears as it reminds the audience of death, ghosts and this leading to the perpetrator.
Long takes are used during the scene in which he discovers he is invisible to help the audience realise they are in real time with him. Also the use in the colour blue that transfers to grey shows the development in the narrative (and his life as he starts off happy).
Sound- the type of sound used is non-diegetic sound which is a sort of industrial rock music sound which creates an eerie sound in order to make the audience feel uncomfortable. It also creates a disorientating atmosphere in order to present the main character's feelings towards the main situation of the narrative- this therefore puts the audience in the character's 'shoes' and makes them understand the situation and the character more- it also causes the film to receive an emotional (sad, fearful, intrigued) reaction from the audience because they are able to understand the narrative and character more.
Also ambient sound is used; which is used in contrast to the non-diegetic sound which is jarring to the audience; they are made to realise the world in the film is a stark contrast to their own.

Overall Codes and Conventions for the Thriller Genre:
Overall, Thriller genre trailers use quick shots and panning shots in order to create a tense atmosphere and gain an audience response of fear for the character and frustration because of mystery narratives used; intriguing more audience members. Also a lot of text is used to get across to the audience the narrative and genre which is very important in targeting the right audiences; this will highlight the type of audience it is aimed at meaning age, gender and attraction in certain types of films. The sound is also important as high pitch and low pitch and general change in tone will create an unnerving feeling for the audience matching the genre and theme.
Theorists- Film Genre
Barthes
Barthes' theory is useful to our genre of thriller as in our trailer we can convey perpetrators and victims without actually reviling the true nature of the characters in order to persuade the audience to watch the film as the trailer will leave them on a cliff hanger, leaving the audience wanting more.
I think using the 'Enigma Code' and 'Semantic Code' for our trailer will intrigue audience members as we are able to leave questions in the audience's mind as giving off certain visual and sound signifiers we are able to highlight to the audience the mysterious narrative clearly showing the thriller genre and also by using these certain codes we are also able to gain a certain response from the audience.
Stuart Hall
I believe Stuart Hall's theory will be helpful to use in our thriller narrative for our trailer because his theory focused on certain social groups. This way we could show the difference in the perpetrator and the victim and why is each character is given this role and therefore what status they have because of it. This could attract a wider audience as different audience members can relate to different characters making them more invested in the characters as well as the film.
This will get different reactions from different audience members in terms of their own social situations and status- this perhaps creating a message about the perpetrator and why they act out in this certain way- making the audience think.
Bell Hooks
Bell Hooks' theory mostly surrounded race and how black people were treated differently. Although our thriller narrative might not be driven on the idea of race we could present how different groups are treated depending on their status and their actions. The idea of how the way certain people are treated has been carried on through generations because of the way they are could help develop the characters that drive the narrative- for example are perpetrator could simply be a young girl at a school that acts out because of her background/bringing up.

Task 3
Film Posters Research:
'Eden Lake' Film Poster
Through the use of my analysis I believe that the potential target audience is young adults through the use of a young woman at the front, this may appeal to audience's this age more as they can relate. I also believe it may appeal to women over men as the main character is a woman who is shown at the front, she is also dressed in quite 'feminine' clothing which may relate to 'feminine' women rather than more 'masculine' men. The use of the link from the poster to the film is well portrayed as it clearly shows the use of the thriller genre which the films uses and shows the audience who the victim is, while also not revealing the perpetrators which could cleverly suggest the perpetrators are unusual and not usually used as the 'bad guys' in films, (i.e. unexpected.) The effect it has on the audience is fearful and perhaps creates a more tense atmosphere for the audience because of the use of the isolated location. I think using darker colours in our poster like this one would be effective as it represents a darker narrative and also creates a more fearful and 'creepy' atmosphere.
'Disturbia' Film Poster
Through the use of my analysis I believe that the potential target audience is older teenagers as the two main characters' on the poster are quite young and therefore the narrative may be easier to relate to if the audience are a similar age. I do believe that it would appeal to both men and women as both genders are represented on the poster and gender isn't particularly seen as an important feature of the narrative. The poster links very well to the film in the use of characters shown and mise-en-scene used, the use of the binoculars highlights it may be a film in which includes mystery as well as thriller, perhaps as a sub-genre. The use of the characters also shows a young teenage boy and girl which conveys the use of a teenage cast and therefore showing that the film will focus on younger people's lives and will circle around teenage problems rather than older people which will most likely appeal to a younger teenage audience. The effect the poster has on the audience will probably cause the audience to respond in a more fearful way as the use of the suburb type image used at the bottom will cause a more 'creepy' atmosphere as suburbs are usually seen as safe where as in this case it is not and therefore gives a false sense of security.
'Final Destination' Film Poster
Through the use of my analysis I believe the potential target audience would be teenagers as the characters on the poster are shown to be teenagers, the reason this age would appeal more is because if the use of the teenage characters on screen highlights that the narrative may involve teenager problems and topics which teenagers can relate to. I believe that it would also appeal to both genders as the representations of both genders are portrayed equally. The poster links very well to the film as the use of skulls on the cast's faces link to the theme of death within the film and therefore very clearly links to a darker storyline and shows the thriller genre more. The use of the younger characters also link well to the film as it shows that the film will focus more on the use of teenage problems and their lives and perhaps relationships with one another. The effect the poster will have on the audience will be a more spooky one and even perhaps highlight to the audience that the film links to supernatural environments because of the use in wording on the poster: 'YOU CAN'T CHEAT DEATH' and also the use in the image of the lightning, as it all links to bad luck and how that can be turned around by the use of powers.
'The Invisible' Film Poster
Through my analysis of the poster I believe the potential target audience would be focused towards a more mature audience rather than a younger one, this is because the use of the dark lighting and writing suggests it has a darker narrative and perhaps more inappropriate for a younger audience. I also believe it could appeal to either gender because gender from the poster is seen as though it is important or affects the narrative. The use of the poster links to the film very well as the use in rain completely hides the figures face and details of the person which suggest (especially linking to the title of 'Invisible') that a person starts to be forgotten because of something unfortunate happening. The use of the rain being so overwhelming, so much so that the figure is unrecognisable it suggests that the character becomes almost taken over by something and it causes them to disappear, it also suggests that the film contains uses of supernatural elements due to the use in the comparison to death: 'LIFE, DEATH AND SOMETHING IN BETWEEN'. The effect the poster has on the audience is very powerful as the use in the link to death suggests there may be an afterlife or even supernatural subjects are real which may cause a more 'spooky' atmosphere as the idea of 'ghosts/spirits' may scare some people.
Task 4
Mood Boards- Thriller Film Genre Research:
Thriller Mood Board (1)
Thriller Mood Board (2)
I have used close ups in my mood boards because they are used for showing more detail which emphasise a person's emotional state. The close up shot can exaggerate facial expressions which portray emotion- and therefore the audience is drawn into the object/person's personal space which shares their feelings. Furthermore the close up shot can be effective when conveying the thriller genre as it shows the most emotion from the character which can capture the detail of the emotion in an important sequence which the film can create a fearful response from the audience. If it's the perpetrator's close up or even a close up of a prop such as a piece of evidence that reveals something to do with the narrative which could cause a shocked response. I also used a few shots (two-shot) from a thriller films that show importance of relationships between characters, and show they cause a certain narrative to be driven off this, or suggest something to the audience about what is happening and/or foreshadow. I chose to add the character 'Annie Wilkes' to my mood board because her character in the film 'Misery' would be described as psychotic and mad because of her obsession with her favourite book writer- and thought this was a good and inspirational thriller film as the character creates a false sense of security creating a more 'creepy' atmosphere for the audience.
The use of the girl as the right hand corner of the second mood board conveys the use of an isolated seeing can be effective as the character seems more vulnerable and at a disadvantage. Also the use of the close up of the woman from the film 'Psycho' shows her screaming; this could portray clearly which character is more vulnerable than others, therefore suggesting who the victim is.

Task 5

Target Audience
1. (Which of the four quadrant(s) would your film appeal to?)
2. (What is the target audience for the films you looked at when looking at your influences and genre research?)
'Eden Lake'
This graph shows that the right target audience for the film 'Eden Lake' is males under the age of 18. This tells us that thriller films may appeal to more of a male audience than a female audience. This conveys that thriller films also appeal to a younger audience because they enjoy the interesting narrative (as it creates tension and mystery to the storyline).
'Eden Lake' has an age rating of 18, however appealed to more audiences younger than this- it is rated 18 because of the use in gore , violence and the mature nature of some scenes that may be seen as too inappropriate for younger teenagers (aspects where tension is built etc.).
This graph is helpful as it allows us to develop our research in to which target audience would be appropriate for our film in order to relate and understand the audience more to create a successful trailer for them to enjoy and be intrigued by.

'Disturbia'
This graph shows that 'Disturbia' was most popular in female audiences under 18 year olds, as younger female audiences had a score of 7.7 compared to the 7.4 in younger male audiences and older audiences with a score of 6.6 in male audiences and 6.9 in female audiences. This being perhaps because as well as being a thriller, it includes an element of romance which is shown most popular in female audiences. Which may be a reason to target our film at a more female audience than a male audience, especially if we are planning to cast more female roles than male. We believe this will be more popular for female audiences as they may feel they can relate to the characters more and therefore feel more invested in the characters and the film.
'Final Destination'
This graph shows that 'Final Destination' appealed more to a wider range in age however more to females, with a score of 7.0 in females under 18 years and 7.0 for females of 45 years and older, compared to the score of 6.9 for males under 18 years and 6.7 of males of 45 years and older. It shows us that the film appeals more to females under 18 years however also females of ages of 45 years and older. Although this is very different in response to the other films we researched it still shows the popularity in thriller films targeted at female audiences; although the age is shown to be older it also shows that it is popular in younger females as well which can help support our choice in focusing more at a female audience in order to create success for the film. However the score of male audiences aren't necessarily that much lower than the female audiences which shows that we must be careful with targeting our film at a certain gender as the graph doesn't necessarily prove that male audiences don't watch thrillers because they do and quite a lot do just not as many as female audiences.
'The Invisible'
This graph shows that this particular film appealed more to a younger female audience. Again showing the popularity in thriller amongst a more female audience, with a 7.2 score, compared to the 5.1 score of males under 18 which is quite a large difference in score. This showing that it would be smarter and a more successful outcome if we marketed our film towards a female audience under 18 years as this type of audience shows to be more popular amongst this type of audience.
3. (Are there any other audience groups that your film may appeal to?)
4. (What other 'niche' factors could be considered about how you might appeal to an audience?)
We think our main 'niche' appeal for our audience will be the fact it will be a cast of just English actors, and especially considering it is set in a British school will affect the audience it appeals to, and because we believe our main 'niche' factor is the very 'British feel' to it, we think that the film industry, the BFI, will be a film company that our film would work well with.
BFI- British Film Industry
Furthermore through research we interestingly discovered these facts about the BFI and these are some of the factors of why our film would work with the BFI:
-The BFI the British Film Institute. It is a film organisation which promotes and keeps films being made in the UK.
-It allow to the wide range of British and global cinema and to develop the heritage of the UK.
-The BFI support the film culture across the UK, this also including Lottery funds towards fil development in order to increase the audience.
-They aim to achieve success for British films in the UK as well as in other countries.
The BFI also have provided us with information and data on how we can target our audience well through tables of other teenage thriller films in order to help us decide what other 'niche' factors we could use to attract our audience...

'We Need To Talk About Kevin'
'We Need to Talk About Kevin';
Thriller/Drama- 'Pregnancy does not seem to agree with Eva, but what's worse, when she does give birth to a baby boy named Kevin, she can't seem to bond with him. When Kevin grows from a fussy, demanding toddler (Rocky Duer) into a sociopathic teen (Ezra Miller), Eva is forced to deal with the aftermath of her son's horrific act'.
The most popular reason of why audiences went to see the film was the fact it was based of an award winning book; this representing recognition for the film is extremely important meaning within our trailer we could include ratings other people and viewers would give our film and market the film so that it is unique and intriguing so it is recognisable and can be remembered well by those who have seen it. This has given us ideas and inspiration to use some of the 'niche' factors from this film in ours, such as the unique and memorable narrative- we could add a unexpected plot twist at the end of our film, which could be our 'niche' factor in order to make our narrative stand out.

'Chat room'
'Chatroom';
Drama film/Thriller- 'About five teenagers who meet on the internet and encourage each other's bad behaviour. The film is based on the play Chatroom by Enda Walsh'.
The most popular reason audiences went to go and see this film was because of the use in popularity of other people talking about it and asking others to go with them. Therefore we could add more interesting elements and 'niche' elements to make the film different- even though we are developing off a thriller, 'mainstream' convention we will take a more 'niche' approach by implying towards the audience in the trailer that there is a more of a twist within the story line- as this will appeal to mass audiences as well as being different and not 'cliché'. By doing this it will be seen as more interesting and 'keep the audience on the edge of their seats' hopefully meaning more discussion about the film and more people persuading others to go with them. This has also given us more inspirations and ideas of other 'niche' factors we could use within our narrative, such as the fact it focuses on teenagers- this way we could specifically target a certain age range, and also experiment with the main 'niche' factor of what can drive the focus of the film, i.e. a specific and important problem older teenagers face.

'4.3.2.1'
'4.3.2.1';
Thriller/Crime Thriller-'Joanne (Emma Roberts), Cassandra (Tamsin Egerton), Shannon (Ophelia Lovibond) and Kerrys (Shanika Warren-Markland) -- hang out at a restaurant, they inadvertently get roped into a crime caper'.
The highest and most popular reason people watched this film was because of who it was directed by, unfortunately we can not help this because the directors will be ourselves (unknown) however the second highest reason people saw it was because of the genre and type of film. This film was thriller/crime thriller this not being the most popular genre especially for younger audiences/young adults however it was the most popular reason people saw it which means a more unique and different genre may appeal to our target audience because it is intrigue and not as 'cliché' as other genres. We were also inspired and interested by the 'niche' factor was the setting as it was set in an unusual place and this was memorable and different. Perhaps we could experiment with the setting of our film in order to make it different.

Mental Health Issues in Teenagers
Another 'niche' market our film may appeal to is a young audience which can relate to the characters when it comes to mental health. The reason this is, is because we want as well as having it as a thriller film to also perhaps contain a message that we can get across towards the audience. Many teenagers go through stress and struggle which can have a negative impact on their life; so having this subject mentioned in the film can help the audience become perhaps more educated and understanding of those with mental health and also will allow those who are out there struggling to relate and may help them be more open about their own problems and seek help.

5. (What different 'tribes' of youth may be especially interested in your film?)
'Alternative' ;
'Alternative Tribes' are very different from mainstream tribes, (they set themselves completely out from the rest). The alternative tribe are very different and are determined to be different together. The alternative tribe can include themes such as '70s punk rock', most of the alternative tribes are very familiar with digital technology and can show their passion for a certain subject. The tribe who want the opposite of mainstream try out all kinds of experimental things. Young Alts try entry levels of alternative things that set themselves out from others, this being because they have for example alternative opinions and taste.
'Independent film': 'An independent film or indie film is a feature film that is produced outside of the major film studio system, in addition to being produced and distributed by independent entertainment agencies'.

Alternative film example- 'Halloween', this film is about a young boy who murders his sister and is put in prison for 15 years, however he escapes and goes back to where he grew up in order to find his next victims to kill.
Alternative film example- 'Winter's Bone', is about a young girl who takes care of her siblings because her parents are unfit to look after them and is abandoned by their father who is selling their house; they go on a dangerous trip to try and find him.
Alternative film example- 'Blair Witch Project', is about a group of three students travel to a town and document a local legend of 'The Blair Witch Project'. The project soon turns dangerous after they become lost within the woods.
'Mainstream' ;
'Mainstream Tribes' are what most people like and/or start off with and end up staying with it. It is all about staying with what you know and understand which is comforting yet still entertaining. If something stands out it can be a risk and not a lot of people will like it however a slight difference with the same guide can be safe yet interesting and unique.
'Mainstream film': 'is current thought that is widespread. It includes all popular culture and media culture, typically disseminated by mass media. It is to be distinguished from subcultures and countercultures, and at the opposite extreme are cult followings and fringe theories'.

'Mainstream' film example- 'Moonlight', is a film about a young man who is growing up in Miami. It shows his life growing up as a young, black man with guidance of support and love from his community that have raised him.
'Mainstream' example film- 'The Girl On The Train', is about a woman who sees a 'perfect' couple from her train window everyday and one day something strange happens in the couple's garden.
'Mainstream' example film- 'Split', is about a man with 23 personalities and is compelled to kidnap 3 teenage girls and how they fight against the man to escape.
'Leading Edge' ;
'Leading Edge Tribes' are seen as modern and up to date, however are very different and it can be difficult to understand and perhaps predict what they are going to do; this can mean a more diverse style and a more original style (overall a more creative approach).
'Leading Edge film': 'The most modern and advanced position in an activity or subject of research'.

'Leading Edge' example film- 'The 5th Wave', is about how humans have to survive under the attack of aliens which cause dangerous situations for the humans.
'Leading Edge' example film- 'The Boy', is about a young woman who looks after an '8 year old boy'- who is in fact a life-size doll and has to look after it as a human- the nanny is brought to idea after a while that the doll is actually alive.
'Leading Edge' example film- '10 Cloverfield Lane', is about a woman who wakes up after a car accident in a bunker underground with two men and has been told the air outside is unbreathable, unknowing if they speak the truth.
'Urban' ;
The 'Urban Tribe' is focused on people who live in the city, people who are young and busy person, who also is cultured and is up to date with all types of subjects people deal with in life. Urban tribes are influenced by what they see and therefore experience all kinds of different things.
'Urban film': 'Hood film is a film genre originating in the United States, which features aspects of urban African-American or Hispanic-American culture such as hip hop music, street gangs, maras, racial discrimination, broken families, drug use and trafficking, illegal immigration into the United States'.

'Aspirant' ;
'Aspirant tribes'- 'live in the moment'- they know what they want and will spend a lot on what they want; in order to keep up with what is happening without necessarily working hard to get what they want.
'Aspirant films': 'One who aspires, as to advancement, honours, or a high position, seeking recognition, distinction, or advancement'.

'Aspirant' film example- 'The Revenant', is about a man who explores the wilderness and gains life risking injuries, while one of his team members kills his son and leaves him for dead.
Our 'tribe'...
We believe that from our research that our film would be best suited to the 'mainstream tribe'- we believe this because our film narrative and overall use in codes and conventions we want to develop and/or challenge will be most popular in this group. We believe that this will be the right target audience to market out film at through our trailer and poster in order to create success for it. Although we believe our film will fit the 'mainstream tribe' best, we still however believe through our 'niche' factors it will appeal to a more British audience- (even though it may suit a more British audience, it still will include 'mainstream' code and conventions in order to convey the narrative and genre).
6. (Would your film be limited to a UK audience or might it have a global appeal?)
I found out from my audience research that more people had heard or seen the film 'Eden Lake' than the film 'Bonded by Blood'- and more people preferred or would prefer to see the film 'Eden Lake'. Both films are UK films and both did very differently in overall success, 'Eden Lake' being successful even without global success and 'Bonded by Blood' doing the opposite (not becoming successful).
We believe that even though our film may be quite mainstream in terms of thriller codes and conventions that it will be more UK based as it is set in a UK setting, with all English actors. We have also discovered even from a non-global appeal it can still do well.

7. (What limitations are there on your production?)
The limitations of our product:
-It is a UK film. -It has no stars (not reviewed). -No 'star appeals'. -Thrillers aren't the most 'popular' genre amongst teenagers. Example of a UK film; 'Eden Lake' (limitations):
-UK film. -Very British feel to it. -Thriller. - Has mainly British actors. - Not a global film. |
Eden Lake:
-Nominated for Empire Award for Best British Film. -80% on Rotten Tomatoes. -Not global- still did very well (perhaps through the use of marketing at the correct target audience). |
This graph shows that recently the number of total admissions have gone down in cinemas for the UK. Being at its highest in 2009, with 173.5 and in 2016 being at 168.3- being quite a big drop. This showing UK films can be quite hard to make successful. In order to overcome this- although we are focusing on more of a British audience we can still market online- especially since younger audiences today use a lot of social media in order to access things. In our film we can use codes and conventions of a thriller film that audiences find most appealing and also challenge some conventions and codes in order to make it more interesting and different from other UK thriller films. The film 'Eden Lake' was not globally appealing and very UK based however became very successful in terms of ratings from reviews such as Rotten Tomatoes and also making a lot of profit in the UK.
8. (How will your production elicit an audience response?)
Audience Response to thriller films...
Overall, our members of the public recognised the poster 'Split' more than they did 'Don't Breathe'. We thought the reason this may be is because one was targeted more at them and perhaps it marketed at them as a target audience, and the fact it may look more appealing. We found out from this people of their target audience were more likely to see 'Split' than 'Don't Breathe'.
So from our research above we will use micro and macro features that develop and challenge the thriller genre in order to please the audience with their expectations but also take a twist on it to make it unique and interesting. We now also know to use darker and more interesting ways of presenting our film like the film 'Split', by not revealing too much in order to intrigue more audience members about the overall film and gain a more fearful and invested response from the audience.

Initial Ideas
Our initial ideas were that we thought as well as younger people we thought older people would enjoy thriller films just as much. However we found out younger people enjoyed them more as through interviews and research we found they find thriller films exciting and would want to go to see a thriller film.

Therefore from our research we have discovered that older teenagers and young adults from both genders are the target audience we should aim our film at. Through research, interviews and overall surveys we discovered this audience range responded more and seem to know more about thriller films, and also seem to enjoy them more.
Task 6
Film Magazine Cover Analysis
'Sky fall' Empire Film Magazine Cover
'I Am Legend' Empire Film Magazine Cover
'Inception' Empire Film Magazine Cover
The thriller magazine covers influence our planning through the use of dark colours, props (i.e. weapons shown), and especially Mise-en-Scene which is used to portray the thrill of the film and furthermore explaining the narratives may be dark and suggesting certain things about the characters shown on them. The poster are shown to most likely appeal to a more mature audience because of the more mature nature of the films which is suggested through the posters, this is shown through the violent weapons shown and also darker colours which give a more tense atmosphere which suggests a dark narrative. I believe using dark colours and more melancholy facial expressions can clearly represent the story and thriller genre towards the audience.

How To Create Synergy Across Products:
What is Synergy?
‘the interaction or cooperation of two or more organisations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects’.

Posters
Split Poster #1
For the first poster there isn't much on it. This may leave the audience wanting more because of the lack in information- leaving more of a mystery to it. The use of the director's name on the poster as well as the title suggests that his name is enough to intrigue the audience in watching the film in the first place.

Split Poster #2
The next poster is shows the focus of the main character performed by James McAvoy. A close-up shot is shown of him to show his stern look on his face suggesting he will be a fearful character, also a crack is shown as though the poster has been shattered this shows his multiple personalities and how they are destructive to himself and others.

Split Poster #3
The 3rd poster shows the character, Kevin, with shadow like creatures below him, this is to present his different personalities. This helps the audience understand the narrative more and connect with Kevin more as the shadows look as though they are almost luring over him and in this one he may be the victim with something inside controlling him.

The final one shows Kevin split in half with his different personalities trying to get out. This may suggest to the audience that his personalities will come out of him and cause him to behave differently. The fact he is being split open represent quite violent behaviour and clearly conveys the thriller genre and also the violent and fearful narrative.

Trailers
Trailer #1
The first trailer allows it to look like as though it is from some one's point of view, in order for the audience to connect more with the characters, as they are able to connect more with the fear and tension. This is because the tension built up from the point of view shot hides the character who the audience's view they are looking through, and the reveal of what the character looks like and who they are plays on the audience's mind more. The use of the high pitched music through allows the non-diegetic sound (sound track) to add to the atmosphere of the narrative and genre. The childish like music at the beginning represents and also foreshadows the main character's personality disorder as like the music, the character can also be portrayed as childish, as just like children he acts out different characters- young characters, old ones, etc. The sharp editing, is in order to keep the audience interested and also on the 'edge of their seats' as they are seeing something new constantly and these things can be shocking to the audience- therefore keeping them intrigued at all times throughout. The use of the main character's clothes, similarly to the music portrays his mental health issue and also the very different and distinctive characters that will appear in the film, this will give the audience a better understanding of the characters before they go and see the film.
This trailer gives the audience quite a lot of information about the film- including perhaps the clue of strange and supernatural twists, and a lot of information about the narrative and characters. This giving the audience insight on who may or may not escape/survive the perpetrator.

Trailer #2
This trailer (the official trailer) has slightly longer cuts, with faded black screens after one shot and before another, this is in order to prolong the shock of the thriller and perhaps fear the audience may be feeling. The other thing that is adapted on with this trailer is the use of the girl characters and their actions- the girl character which seems to be more focused around is shown to be shooting a gun of some kind and this is to give the audience the message that she may perhaps be the strong character in the film. This could also foreshadows the use of the 'final girl'- and how her character may link to this in some way, furthermore conveying perhaps her character's escape and survival over the other girls.
The fact this official trailer develops more on the girl's character but keeps the same amount of information given to the audience on the main male character could suggest that the narrative is also driven on her story and therefore she is important when it comes to understanding the storyline.

Furthermore from other research I found out other marketing strategies had been done for the film, 'Split'...
Online
The film has also used marketing and synergy through online use. The film has its own website which is officially created on the social media site, 'Tumblr'. On the website it shows the trailers for the film and also has even more advertisement for the film, giving links for the other social media sites: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram- which has profiles on them, especially made for the film.
The 1st section of the website is all about what the narrative and film is about and the 2nd section contains pictures of the film. There also contains on the website many things such as, GIFs and videos that are available to furthermore explain the film, etc.

Advertising and Cross-Promotions
Furthermore, other ways that the film promoted it's self through synergy and marketing was through TV spots, in order to give audience's more information about the film and give more details of what is in the film in order to intrigue audiences to watch it more. On the TV spots they also allowed audiences to watch trailers and clips to convey the main character- focusing on the driven focus of the film-his different personalities. The TV spots were also used on social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook, this targeting all types of audiences, including younger ones as well.

Media and Publicity
The film 1st appeared at the 'Fantastic Fest' where it became very popular and interested in. The director of the film, Shyamalan, had many interviews in which he spoke about the film, and the main character performed by, McAvoy, also did interviews where he talked about his own role and how interesting it is- especially because of the main focus of the many different characters he has to perform within his character.

Posters
Poster #1
This first poster doesn't give much away, and states 'You Don't Know What You've Got 'Til It's...Oct 3'. This cleverly plays on the focus of the film, which is the main character's relationship (main theme and genre of romance and drama, and also the mature nature of suggested mental health), but also the date release. The information on the bottom further develops on 'Amy missing'- and further suggests that her character is a very important focus of the film. All these things on the poster are like clues, clearly conveying the dark narrative of the film.

Poster #2
The next poster produced, shows a lot more detail of the film than the other one. Including the two main characters, one shown at the bottom, shown from head to toe and the other one with only their eyes showing at the top. This could be suggesting to the viewers that the films characters are an extremely important focus of the film- this may be the reason for so much detail and background on the character Amy as the film is very much focused on the idea of the characters and their behaviour and actions. This poster, although shows more detail than the other one, again doesn't give away much to the audience, therefore continuously driving on the drama and mystery of the film.

Poster #3
The more and more the audience are being shown of the characters little by little- the use of the characters showing no particular emotion adds to the mystery of who the perpetrator and victim are, which may link to the storyline and both the character's actions. The position of the characters have changed as the woman's eyes was the only thing to be seen in the other film poster where as in this poster she is shown in a mid-shot, in front of the man- like the other posters, this may be sending a clue to the audience- (such as planting the question in the audience's minds of; 'Is Amy who we thought she was?'). By leaving clues to the audience for the film is a very clever way of connecting with them as they are looking out for clues just as are people in the film because of Amy's disappearance.

Trailers
Teaser Trailer
The teaser trailer clearly is more steered towards the husband being the perpetrator- throughout there is a built up in tension between the two main characters, and how their relationship is going. The use of a cliff hanger at the end is in order to intrigue the audience, this is because the audience are left with the both different views on who did what. The use of the slow, faded transitions between shots of the couple being together at the beginning was in order to make it more shocking to the audience when they start to have an argument.

Official trailer
This trailer (the official trailer) shows more twists within the story, as it introduces more characters that could have to do with the 'disappearance'. Not only does it introduce more characters to the audience but also more information about the character, Amy, which focuses on her 'diary' and the information it contains about her husband. Unlike the 'teaser trailer' it gives more informations and facts suggesting it may not be the husband after all which can interest and invest the audience in the film more because the information given in this trailer, which hasn't been given to audiences/viewers before now creates more mystery and more of a 'puzzle' for them to figure out. Comparatively, the teaser trailer started off with the blame all targeted at the husband and ended with him pleading he wasn't guilty, where as the official trailer does the opposite (starts with the husbands innocent and then the atmosphere changes and he is found by people around him to become more guilty and guilty), this suggests there will be a large reveal and twist within the film. This leaving the audience wanting more and wanting to know who the perpetrator is.

Film Magazines
This film magazine cover (Empire magazine) shows less details of the film, and leaves the narrative to be explained more from the facial expressions from the characters on the cover. The use of 'Amy's shocked expression, and her body language lying completely still makes her seem as though she is the victim. Comparatively, the male character (her husband) is seen as more dominant and relaxed, this may suggest he is a powerful man, and the more dominant person in the relationship. This further shows how the film makers want the audience to believe the main male character is the perpetrator, this could foreshadow perhaps bad behaviour from his character- and cause the audience to believe his character is a bad one when they go to watch the film. The use of the targeting the husband's character is a clever way to make a twist surprising in the film as it will be a shock after the marketing of his character 'being bad' to actually turn out to be the opposite.
This next film magazine cover (Entertainment magazine) shows a lot more detail around the characters in the cover which exposes more about the narrative. The use of the medical equipment could suggest to the audience the theme and genre; mental health and thriller, this means clearly conveying the narrative and what atmosphere the film will have. It also suggests more about the storyline and who may be the victim and who may be the perpetrator- these few more details could completely change the audience's perspective, as something is shown to be in the character, Amy's hand, where as her husband is innocently sleeping next to her, this could suggest he is the innocent victim all along. This causing more confusion among the audience, further developing on the mystery which is, Amy's disappearance and what possibly could happen in the final of the narrative to explain the mystery to the storyline.
Interestingly through our research we also discovered other ways the film, 'Gone Girl' marketed their film...
Campaigning and Synergy
The film 'Gone Girl' used synergy and campaigning in order to market the film. They did this by using the idea of the narrative within the film- by putting up boards with the phone number which you would have to dial in order to 'find Amy'- the main character who goes 'missing'. This was a huge part of the campaigning and was hugely focused on the target of 'finding Amy'. There were actually phone lines in which would respond to the public calling up with the phone number, there was also a website that went viral because of this. The website would show clips from the film and also links to other social media sites which related to the film.
Furthermore, to add to the idea of a more childish feel to it- linking to the character, Amy, being a children's book writer, there was marketing and promotion of the character's books, 'Amazing Amy book series'. This was to give a background to the books, perhaps allowing more information about Amy's character. The books can even be downloaded through iBooks.
Another synergetic and marketing approach was by connecting with the audience more and creating the 'River of Secrets', in which the public would be asked, "What do you hide from the one you love?'- viewers could even respond through audio tracks and texting- which would then be put on the website. The personal question adds tension and more of a 'spooky' and mysterious atmosphere towards the film.
(3)'Don't Breathe'-
Trailers
The official trailer very much focuses on the fact that the older man is blind and how even though he is it doesn't stop the people breaking into his house almost turn into the victims because of his ways in dealing with them. It plays on the fact he can hear well and can use this to his advantage, the use of the breathing shows the panic and fear in the characters and allows the audience to understand their feelings more, this rising the tension throughout, with the main target being them getting out. The use of the dark and dingy lighting gives a more 'fearful' and 'creepy' atmosphere in order to make the storyline follow a darker path to represent the character's dark lives and dark personalities. This creates more of an understanding and bond between the characters and audience and therefore the audience can become more invested in the film when they go to watch it, creating an overall tense atmosphere, making it a more engaging and better experience for the audience.
Posters
Poster #1
This poster shows the main character, this conveys that the film may be very character based. This character is the only one shown on the poster suggesting she is very important to the story- her facial expression, of fear shows the audience she may be the victim, portraying her as slightly weak at the moment, however because of the lack in images there is no one to compare her to so the audience can't understand much of her character apart from the fact she is shown as slightly vulnerable. The fact the poster doesn't tell the audience much through images, it attracts the audience's eyes to the writing on the poster, such as the statement, 'FROM THE CREATORS OF EVIL DEAD'- this shows the audience that the film can be mainly marketed of the fact it is also been made by a director who has created the popular and well known film, 'Evil Dead', this can also show the audience the kind of target market they are aiming for as 'Evil Dead' is a more mature film (i.e. not for children) and is seen as a horror/thriller. From the use of this statement and the young woman's fearful expression they are able to recognise the film as more of a thriller, this clearly conveying the genre and perhaps themes that may be used in the film, and automatically attracting some types of audiences more than others.

This poster gives a lot more information to the audience than the other one; through more images and writing. The audience are given the setting of the film, and the dark colours used again show the darker storyline and conveys the thriller genre. The fact the man at the top is shown to be so much bigger than the other characters suggests to the audience that he is the perpetrator as he has more of an advantage, which is usually one of the main factors of the 'bad' character and is what makes them so much more fearful. This is also shown through the fact the 3 people at the bottom are holding tools, which are suggested to be weapons, and even though they are the ones with the 'weapons' they are still shown as weaker because of how small they are compared to the man at the top suggesting the 3 at the bottom are actually trying to protect themselves. Like the other poster it shows the film is very character based as this presents all their status' within the film and therefore influencing the audience's thoughts on who is 'bad' and who is 'good'.

We also interestingly found out other ways the film, 'Don't Breathe' was marketed...
Digital Marketing
The film, 'Don't Breathe' used a wide range of digital marketing which included a campaign for the film through the social media website, Snapchat. This was in which the social media site would feature a 10 second Snapchat video advertisement; this would mean that users could swipe up and then are able to see even more of the film, a 90 second video of the film. This was used through the 360 degree video web page in the app.
Furthermore, other social media sites were used to market the film. The 360 degree video was not only available on Snapchat but also the other social media site, Facebook and the website Youtube, where many videos are posted (these are both very popular sites). This can allow the film to become more popular as this type of marketing allows the viewers/users to connect with the characters and understand the environment more, meaning it creates a larger and better atmosphere for the audience. .
Overall the films which I have research, I have discovered the thriller films use similar use in dark and dingy colours, representations of the narrative and characters and by building tension they also convey a clear perpetrator and victim in order to portray the thriller genre in their synergy.
Task 8
Specific roles within the group:
Advice about my roles within the group...
Film Directors
Research (and advice)...
|
|
What I have learnt...
I have learnt a lot through my own research on my and other's roles within the group. For my particular roles I have discovered from advice of directors, that as a director I must take responsibility as a leader and being focused and passionate about everything within the film, especially when all the action is actually happening- this meaning putting in my input and being detailed with the narrative. This is so the storyline becomes more 'alive' and creative in order to produce an exciting and intriguing piece of work that will attract the target audience.
I will now...
I will now update and organise my group by showing strong leadership skills, and providing creative and exciting ideas towards the team. Another thing I will do is have group meetings every scheduled working time, to talk about more and new ideas which could make the film better, and to also (within the meet up) make sure everyone is up to date with what is happening within the production.
Struggles as a Director:
As a director I feel I may struggle with the many tasks I will have to take on and because of this, there is a lot of pressure. In order to overcome this I will become organised with my time and remain level- headed in all situations.

Film Editors
Research (and advice)...

What I have learnt...
I have learnt a lot through my own research on my and other's roles within the group. For my particular roles I have discovered advice of editors, that as an editor I must pay a lot of attention to detail and should always be focused and creative with my work. I have also discovered I must experiment with different ways of editing and then applying my skills to my work to which I think is as high a standard it can be produced at- I must know my way around editing well in order to create the final product, therefore I must take time over the editing process in order to create a high standard product.
I will now...
I will now update and organise my group by making sure everything that is developed on and changed within the editing to be reported back to the team and make sure everyone agrees for the better of the film. I will experiment and therefore discover more when editing and suggest to the team if we can take larger risks when editing to produce a higher standard film. I will do a similar routine as I would in my role as film director, by keeping everyone up to date on what has been changed at meetings and physically showing them to get a second opinion- and to also take on other team member's ideas.
Struggles as an Editor:
As an editor I will struggle with experimental techniques of transiting from one shot to the other in order to build tension and portray the thriller genre and create a more interesting trailer. To overcome this I will practise with using 'Final Cut' and every time I learn something new I will record my results in order to show my progress and also use to refer back to.

Task 9
Media Inspiration:
I particularly enjoyed the shower scene in his film 'Psycho' because the camera angles are very unique and clever creating a 'creepy' and 'unnerving' atmosphere.

I particularly enjoyed the sequence in 'Reservoir Dogs' where a police officer gets his ear cut off as the contrapuntal sound in the back ground (diegetic sound) creates a false sense of security for the audience and the gore which adds a more uncomfortable and shocking feeling for the audience.

I really enjoyed the ending sequence in the film 'Shutter Island' where the main character still turns out to have a disorder which is a huge twist as an audience you think all is well and it is such a sudden twist at the end which makes is unexpected and makes the narrative even more unique.

I particularly enjoyed his film 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind', specifically the poison cup scene, I thought this scene was very brutal and realistic creating even better aspects of the thriller genre through the visual signifiers and harsh dialogue of the woman.

I enjoyed a sequence from the film 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park' which shows a few characters being attacked by a dinosaur, I think the use in panning shots and long takes is very effective as it builds the tension up for the audience.

I enjoyed his work in the film 'The Revenant', particularly in the sequence where Leonardo Dicaprio's character gets attacked by a bear. In the beginning of this sequence one shot is used and a panning shot is used to introduce the bear into the scene, the use of this cinematography creates tension for the audience and puts the question in the audience's mind of, 'is he going to survive?'.

One of her films I enjoyed was 'The Aviator' and the particular scene i enjoyed was the scene where the character Howard has locked himself in a room due to his mental health. The use of the editing conveys his mental state and what he as a person is like. The voice over of him speaking about what needs to be done to reach his requirements tells the audience that he is obsessive over things, such as organisation and may portray to the audience that he has the condition, 'OCD' and other mental health issues which could foreshadow later, unfortunate events.

One of his films I enjoyed was 'Gone Girl' and specifically the scene where the wife gets hit by her husband and editing is used to pro-long the shock of her getting attack. The shot is slowed down and a flash of dark is used between the hit and the fall, the use of the flash of dark represents the husband's moment of darkness he shows in his character.

I enjoyed the film she was in, 'Django Unchained' in the scene where she is re-united with the character, Django. The reason it was this sequence that I enjoyed the most was because she shows the strength of her character when she speaks bravely to the man who could treat her badly because of the racial divide at the time the film is set. I was extremely impressed by her acting techniques when it comes to such a serious topic and role.

One of the films he was in that I enjoyed was 'The Wolf of Wall Street' in the scene where Leonardo Dicaprio's character tries to take his child. I thought his acting in this particular scene was amazing because he manages to convey so many emotions in such a small amount of time- by not only angering the audience with his outrageous behaviour but also creating a small amount of sympathy towards his character at the end of the scene where it shows him for the first time truly understanding what wrong he has done through his actions through his sad facial expression.
