Planning-Task 10
Planning: Writing a Treatment
'A film treatment (or simply treatment) is a piece of prose, typically the step between scene cards (index cards) and the first draft of a screenplay for a motion picture, television program, or radio play. It is generally longer and more detailed than an outline (or one-page synopsis), and it may include details of directorial style that an outline omits. Treatments read like a short story, but are told in the present tense and describe events as they happen'.
After our research, we collected our plans together and discussed our ideas and plans for our narrative and trailer. We then went on to put our ideas together and created our narrative for our treatment and planning development.

Pitch
Title: 'Incrimination'
We decided that we should give the film the title of 'Incrimination' as this word represents the problems that occur within the film, suggesting there will be trouble within the story that drives the narrative and therefore the characters as well. The use in wording, is similar to the word 'criminal' which conveys the film as a darker film rather than a lighter film, and also suggesting that a crime would be committed within the story line. This overall suggests that there will be an element of suspicion and mystery that drives the film, which cause tension throughout. It reflects the story because the word 'incrimination' also relates to the word 'accusations'- it shows the main focus which the film is driven on, (the girl's disappearance and who did it).

Genre
The genre for our film is, thriller, we will communicate with our audience by developing and challenging the codes and conventions of a thriller film.
We will develop thriller codes and conventions through macro and micro features...
We will develop thriller codes and conventions through macro and micro features...
- One convention we are developing on within our film in order to meet our audiences' expectations and to communicate with our audience well is the character of the victim. We want to portray the stereotyped 'girly girl' and 'weaker' girl/woman. By conveying our main victim as quite feminism and perhaps not as strong as other character it will cause the audience to show more sympathy towards her character and feel more fear towards her character as she is more vulnerable and not able to protect herself, therefore she is in more danger.
-We would also like to challenge some conventions of thriller films, we wanted to do this by creating a more exciting ending, that stands out amongst other thriller films. To do this we wanted to create a plot twist at the end- we are going to do this by building tension throughout and then reveal a rather unexpected perpetrator in the storyline.
-Furthermore, another convention we want to challenge in order to make the narrative more interesting and also different from others, we decided to create one female character (Millie's character) different from most 'girly girl' characters. Her character will also go against stereotypes because even though her character is seen as an 'outsider' and is seen as guilty, actually turns out to be innocent.
- We have also decided to challenge the conventions of having a stronger perpetrator and challenge the gender, as we would like to create a twist in which the actual perpetrator is the best friend looking for the missing girls and because of her mental health and medication she is on she can't remember what she has done (this is a unique storyline and also unexpected.)

Main Characters
We have 4 main characters, who we want to portrayed as very different and distinctive characters. We want all our characters to be clearly represented individually and to stand out and each to be very unique in order for the audience to find them more interesting (for them to be memorable characters). I created a mind map for each character, and developed their characters more through imagery and development of their lives in detail.
Alice:
Alice has quite a normal and average home life; she lives with her two parents and her younger brother. She lives in the more expensive side of the suburbs compared to her friends, however doesn't have so much money to be called rich. She has quite an easy life at home and doesn't face many problems (a happy family life).
Ben:
|
Millie:
Millie also has quite a normal life at home, however only lives with her dad and younger brother. She too lives in the suburbs but in the less expensive areas, she lives in a council estate and her family has a decent amount of income. She doesn't have that hard of a life but is seen to have less opportunities than characters like Alice.
Ella:
|
Ben lives quite close to the school within the suburbs, he is an only child and lives with both parents. He doesn't have a great relationship with his parents and spends most time out rather than at home. His family has quite a good income and because of that his parents go on holiday a lot, even during the time Ben is at school.
|
Ella also lives quite close to school in the suburbs, and lives with her Mum, Aunt, Uncle and 2 older cousins She has a good relationship with them, especially her Aunt and spends the same amount of time with friends and family. They are quite well off, but Ella isn't handed everything and works hard herself- she has been brought up by her Aunt with the aim of determination. However, unfortunately suffers from severe anxiety and is on medication.

Portrayal of Mental Health in Ella's Character
Thriller films that inspired us...
This film has a similar target audience to our own, especially when it comes to age and gender. 'Carrie' shows a large focus on teenagers and their lives, although it mainly focuses on a more super natural aspect in the film it also deals with things such as bullying and what the school environment is like for different students from certain groups, i.e Binary opposites- Popular V.S unpopular. This is why the film would appeal to a teenage audience overall- and although the main focus is around a girl and I would say that it is usually shown that women enjoy elements of romance more than men (which is shown in the film between the popular boy and unpopular girl when he takes her to prom)- it still doesn't necessarily aim at a certain gender and therefore is suitable for all genders.
This film shows quite a clear target audience in which it represents the stereotypical idea of what teenagers lives are like: drinking, smoking and partying with friends. This showing that it is targeting perhaps older teenagers due to the 'young party vibe' and also more mature scenes. The use of the range in cast members in gender suggests it also targets all genders rather than one and the use of a very British cast also shows that it may be less of a global film and would appeal more to a British audience because a British audience may be able to relate to the British characters more.
Selling point
We believe our main selling points of our film will be...
- Our plot twist; we believe this will be very effective as it will make the film unique and stand out. We also believe this is more likely to keep the audience invested, as tension will be building throughout the whole film until the end where everything is revealed.
- Another is the fact we will be using thriller codes and conventions that will be wanted and expected by the audience- including things such as visual and sound signifiers;
Our target audience will be young adults (and also older teens)- this is because younger adults are known to like thrillers because of the excitement and thrill you get watching it. Also we believe they are able to relate to the idea of the social groups involved, and will enjoy and understand the message being send across.

Albert Bandura
Bandura (1961) conducted a study to investigate if social behaviors (i.e. aggression) can be acquired by observation and imitation.
The Bobo doll experiment was the collective name of experiments conducted by Albert Bandura in 1961 and 1963 when he studied children's behavior after watching an adult model act aggressively towards a Bobo doll, a toy that gets up by itself to a standing position when it is knocked down.

Furthermore due to this we believe that younger audiences would find sequences in our film frightening or in appropriate because of the mature nature of the content within the film, as the theory conveys children copy aggressive behaviour.
From our theory research we believe that an age rating of '15' would be appropriate as anyone younger may misunderstand certain violent behaviour and will therefore allow them to believe that the violence shown in the film is acceptable and the 'norm' and may copy the behaviour shown.
Furthermore...
Furthermore...
Our Age Certificate:
We have chosen the appropriate age certificate for our film, 15. We believe that this is appropriate as it allows us to show a certain amount of violence, strong language and more mature natures in the film. We believed having a lower age certificate, for example, a 12, would disadvantage us as it would limit us from showing certain things. We think the content within the film would relate to this age range so having it certified as a 15, would allow our target audience to see the film, (as having it at an 18 would stop older teenagers, who are classed as 'minors' seeing it- we therefore will be able to target our audience of older teenagers and above by having our film rated as a 15).

Why we decided to make a change to our 'Final Script': We decided in order to connect with our audience more and as well as creating a creeper and tension building atmosphere for our trailer we would also want to develop on mental health issues and send a message across to our audience, (perhaps educating our audience and therefore giving them a better understanding on mental health.) By adding more into the trailer script about the character, Ella's mental health and her medication it also continues to play on the fact that even though the audience are given the perception it is one particular girl it could still be someone else because of certain ways in which people's behaviour changes through certain impacts on them in their life.
Our FINAL TRAILER SCRIPT
Sound to be used in script:
We want to use continuous non-diegetic sound (soundtrack) of eery sounding music playing to add a layer to the 'creepy' atmosphere of the trailer. We also have thought about the music having different pitches throughout to add an unnerving feeling to convey the characters' disorientated and confused feelings.
Unique Selling Point (USP)
Our main 'Unique Selling Point' within our trailer script is our representation of mental health issues within teenagers because it differentiates us from other films within the thriller genre, this is because not many thriller films that are targeted at teenagers focus on mental health.
-Task 12
Rough ideas for storyboard:
This video shows us drawing some of the storyboard. It's merely a plan and a rough draft.
Our First Storyboard Creation...
Our Final Storyboard:
As well as diegetic sound used throughout (in script) there will be non-diegetic sound of a soundtrack of 'unnerving' music to match the thriller genre and narrative. We will also be using quick cuts throughout as we think even though it is simple it is affective as it isn't 'cheesy' and quick cuts will also fit very well at the end to build up tension for the audience. Although we want to use quick cuts throughout we will still experiment when it comes to editing and may use fade transitions when it comes to the establishing shots as it gives a slight overwhelming feeling that reflects the narrative and characters' feelings.
-Task 13
Organisation of Actors
Our Main Characters:
Name: Alice Benton
Age: 17 Ethnicity: White, British Gender: Female Alice is a popular teenage girl who is seen as a bubbly and light hearted person. She is seen as very easy going and likeable- regardless of her popularity within the school environment her character goes against the stereotype of the 'horrible popular girl' at school, as she is she shows kindness towards everyone. Characteristics/Traits: Alice may need to be physically slim and petite to reflect her delicate nature. |
Name: Millie Harrington
Age: 17 Ethnicity: White, British Gender: Female Millie is seen as an outsider, she is a very quiet and shy character. Millie is shown as quite a solitude character as she keeps out of other people's business and doesn't have many friends- unlike Alice she is seen as quite a tense person who worries about things, such as school work a lot. Characteristics/Traits: Millie may need to be physically frail and weak to reflect her timid nature. |
Name: Ben Leonard
Age: 17 Ethnicity: White, British Gender: Male Ben is seen as one of the most popular boys in the school, however isn't the stereotypical, loud and confident 'popular boy'. Ben is seen as the peacemaker of the group and is also quite level- headed about things. He doesn't tend to worry about things to much and is quite optimistic about bad situations. Characteristics/Traits: Ben may need to be physically lean and tall to reflect his strong nature. |
Name: Ella Stuart
Age: 17 Ethnicity: White, British Gender: Female Ella is quite a confident and brave character, she is never afraid to speak her mind, especially when she thinks someone is doing something wrong she will speak up. Ella is very close to all her friends within the friendship group and is very caring towards all of them, (she stands up for herself as well as all her friends.) Characteristics/Traits: Ella may need to be physically small, because although she is a determined character her small and petite physique may represent her mental health issues and how this may symbolise how it overwhelms her and her small body may convey her weaker side. |
Audition Posters
Due to cost affects we made the decision to print out in black and white rather than colour. We also made the decision to not put specific timings for auditions on the poster so that the actors would be able to make their own appointments via contacting us through our email and number on the poster, this was due to their own busy schedules as A Level students.
Actors we considered before the final stage of auditions:
Auditions:
Audition (Jennifer Beck):Audition (Liberty Hinze):Audition (Luka Shaxson): |
Audition (Edie Ryan-Law):Audition (Emily Foskett):Audition (Amelia Jennings): |
Audition (Nicholas Weaks): |
Audition (Callum Benson): |
Due to busy schedules of A Level students many were unable to do face to face auditions and many decided to go through the process in which they would send in their own made audition tapes at home. However, we were able to experience a face to face audition with Emily Foskett in the Drama Hall; we realised after Foskett's audition how important it was for her that we had her do a live performance in front of us as her character is very strong and therefore it was very important that she shows her range of expressions correctly verbally and physically in a naturalistic way. We really needed to see if Foskett could portray this well under pressure- and she did.
Our final decisions...
We believe Shaxson is perfect for the role of Alice because we wanted someone who could portray an innocent and sweet character- through her audition tape she proved she could present sensitive issues through a weaker character well. Luka has performed in many performances over the years- taking Drama for GCSE and now in process of doing Drama as part of her A Level studies. Shaxson has also performed outside of school and has taken on many roles- from in school performances to do with sensitive issues such as human rights in her devised pieces , to performing as comical characters in performances such as 'Bugsy Malone'. Her range of acting skills has led us to believe that she can really push herself acting in this role. Shaxson has also told us she wants to continue doing Drama outside of school and perhaps through to further education at University.
We believe Foskett would be perfect for the role of Ella because she was extremely well suited to the role. She showed she was able to convey a sensitive topic well, but also was able to convey a very strong character too- she showed she could really get into the mind set of someone who is in Ella's situation. We found her emotional memory to be extremely well done- she was able to really convey the feeling of the character and therefore create a good emotion response from me and my peer. We thought she could really push herself to play the character, Ella- we want to create a sympathetic response from the audience towards Ella's character and we strongly believed Foskett could really relate to the character and show the character's feelings. Foskett has also taken Drama for GCSE and is now in the process of taking it for one of her A Level studies and has informed us Drama is her passion and she wants to do it at university. She has also completed work experience at the Churchill Theatre in which she found enriching and we thought her practical knowledge would enhance her performance.
We believe Hinze would be perfect for the role of Millie because her video she sent in showed us she has a very unique way of acting and it showed us she has a range of acting techniques she uses when performing. Another thing we both picked up on was that her fashion was very different and unique, and we both thought overall she really suited the side of Millie's character when her uniqueness and independence is really conveyed. Hinze came across as quite an independent person who is quite different to the stereotypical 'girly girl'- which is what we want for our character Millie. Hinze has taken Drama as a subject for GCSE and is in the process of taking it for A Level- Hinze has received an A* for her GCSE results and has proven to be very well educated on practical and theory Drama.
We believe Benson would be perfect for the role of Ben because he showed an authoritative manner during his audition- he is extremely well suited to the role of Ben as he showed a level-headed manner. Benson showed a level of control and leadership in his acting where he was able to convey an emotional situation in a passionate and proud way, this really shows us, he as an actor can show off his passion for Drama and film in his acting techniques by portraying many different levels of emotions. Another thing we picked up on was Benson's height and how his physique could represent Ben's clear mindedness and his therefore quite powerful and calm character who can deal with things well. Benson has also taken Drama for GCSE and is in the process of taking it for one of his A Level studies- he also has a lot of experience in developing on characters through his own devised pieces and scripts he has written himself, proving he can put his own drama techniques into practise within Ben's character to show the character's feelings and emotion.

Props
Initial Ideas
Props Mood board
My mood board shows my initial and developing ideas for props we are thinking of using in our film trailer. My drawings on the left (1) show our first ideas of what props we want to use, and on the right (2) my developed ideas are shown: this was to get more of an idea on what our props are going to be like. So I created and collected more realistic replicas of our props to help us know what we want to use in the actual thing.
What Props we are using from our mood board and why...
Final Choices
Ella's Mobile Phone
Furthermore, we chose this prop because it overall reflects the character Ella's dependence and how she in fact is quite vulnerable as not only is it used as an action code of someone else informing her of her friend going missing but also an alarm for her medication.
Alice's Lipstick
Furthermore, we chose this prop because it overall reflects the character Alice's feminine side and because of this shows she is actually quite vulnerable and the 'damsel in destress' in our story- she is the focus that drives the narration of our film.
Ella and Ben's Books and Folders
Furthermore, we chose these props because it overall reflects the characters' status and environment as this not only conveys what their characters are like but also suggests that the fact no one is listening to Ella's theory of how Alice went missing is because she is a student (i.e. younger) and this links to the fact the police and even her friends don't believe it is also Millie who has abducted her as younger people aren't taken as seriously as adults..
Alice's Missing Poster
Furthermore, we chose this prop because it overall reflects the character Alice's popularity and friendship with the others as in the picture not only is she at a party but she is also standing next to the character Ben.
Ella's Medication
Furthermore, we chose this prop because it overall reflects the character Ella's mental health and how that affects her which foreshadows her actions later on revealed.
Costumes and Makeup
Initial Ideas
Alice and Ben's Costume and Makeup
The character, Alice is a middle class, white female who has quite an easy going life due to her being able to afford things easily and therefore would wear more mainstream and popular clothing to school such as a tailored skirt.
The character, Ben is a middle class white male who has quite a good income and therefore is bought expensive and smart suits by his parents.
The character, Ben is a middle class white male who has quite a good income and therefore is bought expensive and smart suits by his parents.
Millie and Ella's Costume and Makeup
The character, Millie is a middle class, white female- however she is at the lower end and even though is not 'skint' can also not afford luxuries, and therefore wears less popular and mainstream clothing (i.e. not brand new, -over sized jumpers from charity shops.)
The character, Ella is a middle class white female and her family has quite a lot of money so she is able to fall back on to her family if she needs to borrow money, however works hard to gain her own things and therefore saves her own money so she is able to buy her own clothes and therefore doesn't have a massively 'huge' wardrobe and has reasonably priced items of clothing.

Final Choices
Alice's Costume and Makeup
The picture above shows the final complete costume that the character Alice will be wearing- our overall intention we wanted from the use of this particular costume is to convey her innocence and perhaps purity of her character to the audience through lightly coloured clothing such as her blouse. The reason her blouse is pink and represents her purity is the fact light and delicate thinks stereotypically linked to the female gender (as does the colour pink) and the conformed, stereotyped female character is usually portrayed as 'weak' and 'vulnerable'.
|
The picture above shows the final complete make up for the character Alice- our overall intention we wanted from the use of this particular make up is to convey her natural beauty and her very feminine character to furthermore develop the character's vulnerability as a conventional stereotyped female.
|
Ben's Costume and Makeup
The picture above shows the final complete costume that the character Ben will be wearing- our overall intention we wanted from the use of this particular costume is to convey his level-headiness of his character to the audience through serious and professional clothing such as his suit and tie. The reason he will wear this is because suits usually relate to authoritative men and this is the image we want for his character.
|
The picture above shows the final complete make up for the character Ben (no make up)- our overall intention we wanted from the use of this particular make up is to convey his very mainstream male character.
|
Millie's Costume and Makeup
The picture above shows the final complete costume that the character Millie will be wearing- our overall intention we wanted from the use of this particular costume is to convey her individuality and uniqueness of her character to the audience through her clothing typically worn by males such as her shirt and trousers. The stereotypical 'male' clothing conveys her unique character as it isn't the most conventional thing a female would wear.
|
The picture above shows the final complete make up for the character Millie (no make up)- our overall intention we wanted from the use of this particular make up is to convey her difference from other feminine characters to furthermore develop the character's uniqueness (challenging stereotyped females.)
|
Ella's Costume and Makeup
The picture above shows the final complete costume that the character Ella will be wearing- our overall intention we wanted from the use of this particular costume is to convey her feminine character- however the use of the blue is to show the contrast between Alice and Ella, Alice is wearing pink to show her innocence where as Ella is wearing blue to represent her darker character (which may portray behaviour from her shown later on in the film/trailer.) The reason a darker colour would convey this is because colours like blue aren't conventionally linked to the gender female unlike pink which is; this therefore suggests Ella also goes against the 'norm' of a stereotypical female and perhaps has something to hide.
|
The picture above shows the final complete make up for the character Ella- our overall intention we wanted from the use of this particular make up is to convey her feminine character. Although, she won't wear as much as Alice to portray she isn't stereotyped as much as a 'girly' character which could furthermore develop her character for the audience as it suggests she doesn't care as much about those types of things.

-Task 15
Location Shots
Me and my peer came together to discuss what locations we wanted to use in our product and why...
-Task 16
Experimenting With Camera Angles
We have learnt a lot from this process, as we were able to experiment and find out what we both thought was best to fit a thriller trailer. It also helped us to be prepared for how to do new shots we hadn't done before, before the actual filming process that would happen later on. We also leant what shots wouldn't work for a thriller trailer such as constantly using Mid-shots as they are quite basic and disinteresting and because of that we should use more experimental shots. In particular we found doing the Dolly Zoom shot hardest mainly due to the unfortunate inefficient camera equipment as to make a good Dolly Zoom shot you need to move the dolly and the lens (zoom) at the same time, however the lens wasn't smooth and therefore kept sticking so we weren't getting the shot we wanted however we did what we could with our equipment and had several tries. Another problem we had when experimenting with the Dolly Zoom was the fact there was a lack of equipment and therefore at this time we weren't actually able to get our hands on a Dolly and therefore had to hold it trying to be as steady as possible. One shot we were particularly keen on using was the Graphic Match shot as we thought not only is it creative but also would add a tense mood to the trailer as by using a Graphic Match shot it can show that certain things link throughout, perhaps foreshadowing things such as the unknown perpetrator.
